What do you do if a resident is a victim of domestic violence? What are your rights as a property owner/manager? What rights do the victims have? The answers to these and other questions associated with domestic violence at multifamily residential communities will be answered at a free PMA seminar, DC Housing and Domestic Violence.
Kathy Zeisel, Esq., a staff attorney specializing in domestic violence with the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, will lead the seminar. She will review both federal and District of Columbia protections afforded to residents and owners/managers. The District passed legislation in 2006 that provides various requirements for early lease terminations and evictions for domestic violence victims. The legislation also amended the District’s Human Rights Act that bars discrimination against domestic violence victims. The session also reviews requirements of the Federal Violence Against Women Act (which is gender-neutral except for its name), HUD regulations and guidance and the federal Fair Housing Act.
There is no cost to attend, but advanced registration is required because seating is limited. To reserve, email Carole Worley. There is a limited amount of parking on side streets near Parkwest Apartments. The community is close to the Woodley Park and Cleveland Park metros.
